It is inevitable that the electrical system of a modern truck will be complex. Without sophisticated electronics, it would not be possible to control the vehicle’s management modules with any degree of precision. And absolute precision is vital to guarantee compliance with environmental and safety legislation, as well as to achieve outstanding economy, and also to offer new functions aimed at improving productivity.
Scania always aims to reduce complexity. In the case of vehicle electronics, this philosophy has been interpreted by making the systems as user-friendly as possible.
User-friendly for everyone: the driver, the operator, the technicians that maintain the trucks, and even the bodybuilders who will have to ‘tap in’ to the system to power ancillary equipment.
Despite the complexity of the system, the actual electrical circuits are anything but complex. The adoption of CANbus electronics means that there are far less cables and connections routed round the chassis. This means that the possibility for electrical failures is vastly diminished, and also that in the event of a failure, it will be much quicker and easier to locate and rectify.
Reliability is fundamental. The Scania CANbus control unit and its network are designed to last the life of the truck and require no maintenance.
And cost for the customer? It has been estimated that the overall effect on fuel consumption of all the electrical systems interacting is 1%. That’s a 1% REDUCTION, not increase. Just imagine… all that extra functionality – and a cut in the cost of operation.
