Our objective is to make it as easy as possible for the driver to maintain good journey times in all road conditions, whilst at the same time keeping the engine operating within the limits of its most economical rev range.

What’s required is a rapid build up of torque from engine idling speed, and for the peak to be reached quickly and to be maintained close to peak, giving as wide an economy range as possible. Scania aims to make this area as large and as far down the rev range as possible, so that useful torque is developed very quickly, barely 400-500 revs above idling speed.

Torque peaks at around 1100 revs and remains usefully high all the way to 1500. This broad torque band is what makes driving a Scania for both fast journey times and outstanding economy so easy and so relaxing for the driver. All Scania engines are designed to operate this way.

A common feature of all the new Scania trucks is a rev counter with a dynamic green economy band. A green band appears as soon as the engine speed is outside the most economic rev band for a few seconds, alerting the driver where the engine should run for maximum economy.
