Scania five-cylinder 9-litre engines and transmissions

9-litre engines

The Scania modular combustion concept in a new format: five inline cylinders that inherit all the benefits of the bigger Scania engines, but in a lighter and more compact configuration.

Many transport operations don’t need big engines with high outputs. In which case, this new 9-litre unit is ideal. However, even with more modest outputs, you still have to be confident that the engine is more than a match for the task. You still want the strength of a big engine that has an appetite for hard work.

By going to five cylinders, it is possible to exploit all the operational benefits of the Scania modular combustion concept to the full. The lower outputs are achieved with the engines at their absolute peak levels of efficiency and well within mandatory emission limits.

One less cylinder than the inline 6 engines is not merely a matter of shortening the block and crankshaft, and losing a combustion chamber. Two specially-designed balancer shafts have been added to the crankshaft to counter the forces generated by the five-cylinder firing sequence. As a result the engine runs more smoothly, giving a pleasing driving experience. Less vibration within the engine also promotes a longer service life.

The superbly efficient combustion chambers have exactly the same engineering features of other Scania engines that have already proved a great success. You’ll get brisk performance, economic fuel consumption, easy driveability and inherently clean combustion.
