Scania Euro 4 with EGR Technology offers Singaporean Operators Hassle-free Euro-4 compliance.

The Scania Euro 4 engine, incorporating the tried-and-proven EGR Technology promises Singaporean operators hassle-free operations, without the need for expensive diesel additions. With Scania EGR, you just add diesel!

Singapore, 6 Oct 2006:- Scania Singapore today launched the new range of trucks and buses featuring the Scania Euro 4 EGR engines.  With the new Singapore legislation, Euro 4 compliant engines are now required on all new vehicle registrations, in line with the requirements in Europe.

Scania Singapore is the first market to feature an all-Euro 4 engine range in its product line-up, and customers can place bookings for these vehicles with immediate effect.

Both exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technologies bring modern diesel engines to Euro 4 emission levels, and Scania uses both EGR and SGR in its Euro 4 line-up.

However, EGR is the preferred choice for Euro 4 applications in Singapore, as explained by Mr Norman Koh, General Manager of Scania Singapore Pte. Ltd, “With EGR technology, Scania is offering Singaporean operators the most convenient and most cost efficient solution to meet Euro 4 emission regulations.  Unlike SCR engines, the EGR system requires no additional tank and equipment for the urea solution – saving weight and reducing overall operating cost.  With Scania EGR, you just add diesel!”

EGR technology is a simple solution where NOx levels are already reduced during combustion.  The system is effective in all conditions and temperatures – including busy stop-go city and suburban traffic.  It works at all exhaust temperatures and is active as soon as the engine is started.  This is vital in city traffic, where the exhaust temperature vries all the time.  EGR guarantees consistent emission-levels performance.

With EGR, part of the exhaust flow from the engine is cooled and recirculated into the intake air.  The cooled exhaust gases have a low oxygen content, which leads to a lower combustion temperature.  This in turn reduces the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) during combustion

Scania’s EGR system features a number of unique solutions.  An EGR valve and a patented venturi valve are used to feed some of the exhaust gases back into the engine.  The intake air passed via constriction in the venturi valve.  The constriction increases the speed of the air flow and creates a low pressure that sucks the right amount of exhaust gases into the intake air.

A reduction of NOx in combustion normally has an adverse effect on fuel consumption.  With this combination of technologies by Scania, fuel economy remains at Euro3 level, despite the lower emissions.  Overall operating costs remain the same, since no additives are necessary

The Scania Euro 4 EGR buses are also suitable for cross-border operations, where fuel additives are no available.  Scania’s EGR engines have a maintenance-free oxidising catalyst that removes the diesel smell, as well as some particulates.  Both the engine and the oxicat can cope with the higher-sulphur fuel that operators might come across in Malaysia.  The oxicat will revert to normal function as soon as normal diesel fuel is used again.
