New Range of Buses in Singapore is Scania's Best Yet

The new range of Scania K-series buses was launched today in Singapore. Featuring the new Scania Euro 4 engine with EGR, these buses promises maximum reliability and compliance with Euro 4 legislation under all operating conditions.

Singapore, 6 Oct 2006;  The new range of Scania K-series buses was launched today in Singapore.  The launch also coincided with the introduction of the new Scania Euro 4 EGR engine launch, the first in the Asian region.

The new range of bus chassis – which can be ordered with immediate effect – completes the full line-up upgrade for Scania in Singapore, which now offers a full range of bus chassis for tourist, over-land cross border coach and city bus applications.

According to Mr Norman Koh, the General Manager of Scania Singapore Pte. Ltd., “Our bus chassis has been a preferred choice among operators in Singapore, especially the tour and cross border operators, as well as the two biggest city bus operators.  We are confident that this new line-up of buses will further strengthen out product line and the operators will continue to see Scania as a solid product for use in Singapore.”

Highlights from the launch include the introduction of the new Euro 4 engines, featuring Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).  Scania EGR requires no additives to function, saving cost and weight.  The EGR system also works under all operating conditions including busy stop-go city and suburban traffic, unlike the conventional Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system which requires a higher exhaust temperature (hence higher fuel consumption) to be effective.

The Scania Euro 4 EGR buses are also suitable for cross border operations where fuel additives are not available.  Scania’s EGR engines have a maintenance-free oxidizing catalyst that removes the diesel smell, as well as some particulates.  Both the engine and the oxicat can cope with the higher-sulphur fuel that operators might come across in Malaysia.  The oxicat will revert to normal function as soon as normal diesel fuel is used again.

“With our new range of buses powered by the new Scania Euro 4 EGR engines, we are confident we have a very strong product line to offer to Singaporean bus operators,” added Mr Norman Koh.

The new K-series bus chassis includes 3 coach chassis – from 340hp to 380hp featuring 4x2 and 6x2 chassis.  380hp models come with independent front suspension for better stability and superb ride.  On all models, Scania Opticruise automated gear changing system, cruise control, full air-suspension, disc brakes and Scania Retarder come standard.  A new low-floor city bus chassis, powered by a quiet yet fuel-efficient 230hp engine with 5-speed ZF automatic transmission, completes Scania Singapore’s impressive new line-up.
The 340 hp and 380 hp Euro 4 engines now have a swept volume of 12-litres with a torque increase of 100 Nm and a wider torque peak.  Drivers will feel the higher torque ratings in terms of a more relaxed cruising and less need for gear changing, which in turns benefits customer comfort and fuel economy.

A new 230 hp five-cylinder 9-litre engine – renowned for its smoothness, fuel economy, high torque and low-speed power – joins the family in the new city bus range.

Scania’s aim is to provide all the pre-requisites for the best driver station and the best active safety on the market.

This applies to both city and coach models.  With the new bus range, Scania supplies all the basic components and structures needed to set up an excellent driving position and achieve good driver ergonomics;

1. Pendant pedals reduces fatigue on the driver’s legs
2. Plenty of adjustments possibilities for steering column and seat
3. The two levers on the steering column adjusts with the steering wheel
4. The right side steering column mounted lever controls both Scania Opticruise and Scania Retarder.
5. The steering wheel may be specified with buttons to control the computer display (in the instrument cluster), cruise control and downhill speed control.
